More women may be heading to JD Sports for a hoodie or two in the coming months, if the latest trend report is anything to go by. Monsters and Critics recently explained that in the continent, “tight, colourful and form-fitting” are three factors influencing the major trend in sportswear at the moment, and these are filtering through to the fashion world in general.

As far as hoodies and their comfortable counterparts go, ladies are all over this fashion, according to the report. “Women more or less embrace it, favouring form-fitting garments such as tank tops, leggings and tightly fitting sweatpants with fancy seams down the sides, an elastic waistband with a drawstring and cuffs at the ankle,” it claimed.

As such, racks are increasingly full of fleece pullovers, jackets and other clothing designed to breathe and act in a practical way. However, designers are tapping into the culture behind sportswear and are letting sporty people “show off their fit bodies”, effectively writing off the notion that people who work out in the gym should not dress shabbily – it’s a way of life, after all!

“Current sportswear styles are a lot more form-fitting than the styles of just a few years ago, especially women’s sportswear,” said Andreas Rose, a fashion consultant. People want to feel sporty, he said, and this will always be remembered by designers.

Actress Jennifer Hudson has offered her words of wisdom to Dreamgirls co-star and new mum Beyoncé Knowles, advising her to fit in as much sleep into her hectic lifestyle as possible.

Hudson, who has a two-year old son with fiancé David Otunga, emphasised the importance of new mothers getting the sleep they need in a comfortable bed in the initial stages after giving birth, such as the affordable options available at http://www.time4sleep.co.uk/.

Speaking at a Good Housekeeping event this month (January 10th), the star said: “Girl, get your sleep!

“She needs to embrace it. Especially because of the lives we live, a lot of times other people have to care for themselves and you have to have that mommy time.”

After making a shock announcement of her pregnancy following her performance at the 2011 VMAs back in August, global singing sensation Beyoncé this month gave birth to her baby girl – Blue Ivy.

Hudson, 30, went on to advise her to appreciate the early years of Blue Ivy’s childhood: “We talked about this when I had my munchkin. It goes so fast. She’s going to look up and [Blue] is going to be six months. Next thing you know, she’s going to be walking.”

The Nissan Qashqai has again been named the Used Car of the Year, making it the second straight year that CAP – the UK’s independent used car pricing experts – has given it the prestigious title. The panel, made up of market and vehicle valuation experts, picked out the Qashqai from a six-car shortlist.

Points were awarded to each of the competitors – all regularly found in dealerships such as Evans Halshaw – which were based on CAP criteria of excellence in areas such as trusted reputation, affordability and practicality of ownership, innovative impact on the motor industry and – of course – overall retail popularity. Unlike other award ceremonies, CAP designed the get-together to acknowledge all-round excellence, whether it’s from the perspective of private owners, fleet operators, company car drivers or used car dealers.

“It is a great all-rounder that is perfect for its purpose, delivering on style as well as practicality for the motorist and providing a great retail proposition for used car dealers,” said judging panel chairman Mark Bulmer, the editor of the CAP Black Book.

CAP itself added: “Much has been said about the Qashqai as a new car. But the real test of a vehicle is what it brings to the all-important used car market. It is clear that despite very strong competition, for the second year running the Nissan Qashqai clearly deserves the title CAP Used Car of the Year 2011.”

The plus-size fashion industry has come on leaps and bounds in recent years, with brands like Marisota offering fashionable items for women right up to a size 32. That said, there’s one fashion insider who thinks designers in general need to improve their strategy.

American Tim Gunns may be familiar to fans of the US series Project Runway, having starred in nine seasons of the popular show as a mentor to contestants. He also appears on US talk show the revolution and advises women on a weightloss journey about fashion. As such, Mr Gunns considers himself to be somewhat of a spokesperson for larger women and has called for them to be better served by retailers.

In an interview with US Marie Claire, Mr Gunn voiced his opinion that designers need to increase the thought put into the plus-size ranges they design and even said he may considering launching his own brand in the future to help tackle what he considers to be a gap in the market.

He told US Marie Claire: “Whoever’s designing for plus-size doesn’t get it. The entire garment needs to be reconceived. You can’t just take a size 8 and make it larger.”

If you are looking to store your caravan for the winter, or if you have just returned from a Christmas or New Year holiday and want to hide your prized possession away until your next trip, it is important to know how to care for your caravan. What’s more, giving your caravan the love and care it deserves doesn’t have to be expensive.

There is a common misconception that caravan insurance is no longer required when your caravan isn’t in use, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, a great deal of damage can be done to your investment, even when it is stored – such as that caused by the winter elements. You must therefore ensure that you have a sufficient caravan insurance policy in place, such as Simple Caravan Insurance, throughout the year.

Remember to clear out your caravan, being sure to remove any valuable possessions, and give it a good clean when you’re done. To minimise damp and condensation, drain the water system and the toilet’s water tank and position bowls of salt inside your caravan to help soak up any excess moisture in the air. You may also want to store your caravan in your garage or a special storage site, and undertake any servicing and maintenance while it is not in use.

The darker nights of winter provide cover for burglars on the lookout for easy targets, so this season homeowners are advised to invest a bit more in security measures for their property. As well as deterring thieves, taking steps to prevent burglaries can also help to save money on home insurance from providers like Castle Cover, as policies typically cost less for lower-risk properties.

Your first defence against intruders is your doors, so ensure all your locks conform to the British safety standard BS3621. If you still don’t feel your locks provide adequate protection, it could be worth investing in a door grate for an added later of security. Installing a burglar alarm is another measure that could drive down the price of your home insurance, and just the presence of an alarm is enough to put many thieves off.

As burglars often prefer to target homes that are darkly lit and have places to hide, installing motion-sensitive lighting outdoors can be a cost-effective way to protect your home. Properly fitted window locks can also make a big difference in keeping your home secure, and again may pay for themselves in the form of cheaper home insurance policies.

Ceramic tiles boast a multitude of benefits and incorporate a wonderful combination of style and functionality. If you are planning on selling your property in the near future or if you simply want to make some money-savings in the present, ceramic tiles are a great addition to any home. They also have the potential to add to the resale value of a property, making them a worthwhile investment in the long run.

To get the most out of your ceramic tiles purchase, it is important to invest in good quality tiles, such as those available from Topps Tiles, as these are generally more durable and last longer as a result. Whether you are tiling a kitchen or bathroom, they provide the perfect water-resistant and stain-resistant surface.

Should one of you tiles get damaged, there is no need for a complete overhaul and the removal and replacement of the tile in question is all that is required; they are also simple and easy to clean, with a damp cloth usually doing the job. Finally, ceramic tiles come in a range of attractive designs to suit any décor and they can be used to create your own stamp on your home that visitors won’t forget.

Come Christmas time there seems to be some sort of conspiracy across the land that disseminates the belief that women need to buy a new dress for the party season. While this might be the choice of many – and we have on this site offered some advice to those who intend to buy a frock to wear for festive fun – there are other options.

Not every occasion demands a dress, nor is this necessarily the most appropriate or comfortable choice. So, if you don’t feel like buying a gown of some description is the right selection for your seasonable celebration, what should you wear? Ladies of all sizes should be able to find the partywear they want to wear and if this has been a struggle for you in the past, you may want to head over to check out the offering of sites such as Bon Marche. Here you’ll find non-dress options that still provide a touch of glamour. If dresses are not your thing or you find them too revealing, why not try a skirt and plus size evening top? Or you could opt for a simple trouser suit teamed with a blouse or flattering top and add some sparkle with accessories. Whatever your personal preference, as long as the dress code doesn’t demand it, there’s no reason for you to feel forced into a frock just to be festive and you could save yourself some cash by opting out.

Many more unscrupulous people in the UK are often putting their money elsewhere in the world instead of paying taxes and converting their cash much more ethically with TorFX and such companies, yet a new consultation may ensure that people will no longer be able to escape the tax man with forward planning.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) welcomed the government’s decision to carry out a consultation on tax measures that will be included in the Finance Bill next year. It prompted TUC general secretary Brendan Barber to make a statement, with the leader explaining that ministers are “absolutely right to close down notorious tax loopholes” that let super-rich individuals to avoid many billions of pounds worth of tax that regular people must pay.

“But too many loopholes will be left in place and the government has a long way to go before it can justifiably claim to be taking a tough line on tax avoidance,” he continued. “Closing down the stamp duty loophole is particularly welcome as it would tackle offshore abuse and raise revenue through property sales and council tax.”

Mr Barber added that allowing wealthy non-doms to avoid paying their share of tax is “very disappointing at a time when public finances are under close scrutiny”.

With energy bills on the rise, everyone’s looking for ways to cut down on the amount of electricity they use. Computers actually don’t suck up much power compared to many home appliances, but if you use yours a lot you could save a bit of cash by following the tips here.

Something a lot of people don’t know is that desktop PCs, offered by the likes of Misco online, still use a bit of power even when they’re switched off. Turn them off at the wall, along with extras like printers and scanners, when they’re not in use to make sure you’re not wasting energy. The same goes for broadband routers – there’s no point leaving your home one on when you’re at work all day, and switching it off also improves your network security.

You can also set your computer to power-saving mode so that it uses less energy while it’s running, which will allow it to hibernate if you haven’t done anything for a set amount of time. LCD monitors require considerably less power than older cathode ray tube ones, so if you haven’t made the switch yet, maybe now’s the time. Turning down the brightness of your monitor can also have an impact that adds up.

A lucky participant in an auction at this year’s Motorcycle Live event could find themselves having to consult MCE Insurance for cover on a Yamaha R1 that has been ridden and signed by Jorge Lorenzo. The vehicle, which was used over the parade lap at the 2010 Isle of Man TT will take centre-stage at the Riders for Health auction; it was recently taken from the UK to Spain in the Viva Valencia! charity trip by BBC’s Matt Roberts.

Arai-sponsored riders Cal Crutchlow, Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam will be at the event, and visitors to the gathering will also get a chance to bid on exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences at the Riders for Health Day of Champions during the 2012 Silverstone MotoGP.

Other fantastic opportunities include a ride in the pace car at the Silverstone MotoGP, signed Arai side pods from Ian Hutchinson and Kevin Schwantz, a signed Mick Doohan replica Arai helmet, a signed Rossi cap as well as a signed canvas print of Crutchlow at the 2011 Misano MotoGP.

All proceeds go to Riders for Health, ensuring that millions of people in rural Africa have healthcare they require by providing communities with reliable vehicles for health workers.

While there are a number of fantastic places that can provide clothing to match a larger frame such as High and Mighty, it is always right that you would dress correctly. With these three tips, you too can help yourself look the part regardless of where you shop.

Firstly, make sure your clothes aren’t too tight. They must fit perfectly and anything that’s too tight will reveal plenty of lumps and bumps that you should avoid drawing attention to. However, loose clothing hides problem areas but also makes you look much larger than you are. Choose pieces that are able to skim over your body, yet smooth it out on the surface.

Avoid shirts and tops with sloped shoulders, as these draw the eye to your torso; instead, consider checking to make sure that your tops have squarer shoulders as they concentrate attention on the body between the chest and face.

Finally, steer clear of loud or bold patterns. One pattern that is an exception to this rule is vertical lines, while people should opt for solid colours; these make you look ten or 15 pounds thinner than you actually are.

During the post-summer months, weather conditions deteriorate and the risk of rivers and streams breaking their banks becomes higher due to increased rainfall. Of course, not all Brits are unfortunate enough to become victims of flooding. However, due to the unpredictable nature of this type of devastation and the fluctuating weather conditions that have become synonymous with the UK, you can never be sure that you and your home are completely safe from the risk of becoming a victim yourself.

In light of this, it makes sense to take out house insurance from a reputable insurer such as Castle Cover to guarantee your peace of mind in the event that this should happen. Indeed, a suitable house insurance policy can make you a significant amount of money savings and will financially support you if your property is damaged or destroyed by flash-flooding.

You should also make an evacuation plan as a precautionary measure – particularly if you are in a medium to high risk zone – especially if you have a family. This gives you and your family the chance save any items that are of sentimental or material value and will help prevent injuries. It is also important to store insurance policy details and contact numbers in a watertight bag and put together a flood emergency kit.

British singer Pixie Lott excited fans with the launch of her collection for the clothing brand Lipsy, including Lipsy Dresses, which is available at online retailers such as Bank Fashion. However, fans of Pixie’s collection now have something new to get excited about: the launch of a new customer rewards initiative for the collection.

The rewards scheme will offer the opportunity to win thousands of prizes and was created by digital agency Lucid Online. Golden tickets will be on offer when buying Lipsy products online and in-store, giving fans the chance to win prizes including a Fiat 500, iPads and VIP meet-and-greets with pop group JLS. Meanwhile, a Facebook application gives individuals the opportunity to send three friends their codes, to offer them the chance to enter the competition themselves.

Mike Dowuona, Lucid Online’s managing director, said: “When planning the next phase of activity with Lipsy, it was important for social recommendation to be at the heart of the promotion.

“The strength of this campaign lies in its highly targeted and organic approach, which has proven to be a winning factor exhibited in the powerful, social, word-of-mouth spread of the previous collections.”

The latest ‘Pixie for Lipsy’ collection is the fourth range Ms Lott has co-designed for the Lipsy brand and is available with other seasonal women’s clothing at Bankfashion.co.uk.

Consumers may see the cost of plastic surgery rise following the implementation of new guidelines, according to recent reports, meaning some individuals will struggle to get the procedures they desire because of financial restraints.

An estimated 20 per cent increase in plastic surgery costs is expected to occur in the foreseeable future and so individuals may wish to go under the knife with a reputable provider such as MYA before the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) take effect.

The changes will mean that cosmetic surgery procedures are subject to 20 per cent VAT, which providers pass on to patients. The document states that: “[C]osmetic services which are performed mainly for beautification or rejuvenation purposes, or done out of the individual’s free choice rather than out of medical necessity, are liable to VAT at the standard rate”.

Free consultations, treatment payment plans and reduce payment price offers, as offered by some experienced surgeons, may help customers keep prices down without sacrificing safety and their dreams of cosmetic surgery. However, British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons president Fazel Fatah said the decision could “potentially harm” a significant number of patients and urged for more discussions to be had on the topic.

You can purchase energy monitoring devices online and in shops that allow you to monitor how much electricity you are using at any one time and many consumers find these helpful in tracking their usage of appliances. Making big changes such as updating your insulation – potentially with the help of a government grant – will help make a big impact on your energy spend but there are easier and smaller changes that can have a cumulative effect too. For example, you can fit energy saving blinds throughout your home to help stop heat leaking. These can be purchased from specialists such as Direct Blinds.

The cost of energy to UK customers is such a burning issue that last month members of the government including the PM and groups such as OFGEM met to discuss the problem of rising bills. Although many possible solutions were discussed one of the key points that was concluded was simply that as consumers we should be trying harder to use less energy. As we enter this, the coldest time of year it’s a good idea to give your house and energy supply and use the once over in order to make sure you are paying as little as you possibly can to stay happy and warm this winter.

You might not be so keen to spend too much time outdoors at the moment with the rain and cold blustery wind howling. But, if you do make it outside, you may want to look out for a little fashion inspiration. This season, fashion is looking to nature for both colour and texture inspiration.

As a result you will find clothes on sale that are a mix of browns, reds, greens and berry shades such as purple. When it comes to fabrics, it’s time to take your lead from those furry critters who have no choice but to stay outside, come rain or shine. Pick up faux fur, leather and suede jackets, coats and gilets. Make sure to deck out your tootsies in a similar way to keep them warm and dry. Look out for faux fur trimmed ankle boots and knee high boots that will minimise your exposure to the British chill. One brand that are doing this trend well are JDWilliams who have created a range with a real woodland feel.

Of course, the key to getting this look right is picking out a few special items and indulging in some layering. You may want to wear an embellished tunic with a nice faux fur gilet, but it’s unlikely you will want to throw a super thick knitted jumper into the mix too. The lesson to be garnered? Always look in the mirror before you leave the house!

So, it’s coming up to Christmas, that time of year where it’s almost standard to put on a few pounds. If you’re heading to http://www.jacamo.co.uk/ to get yourself something to address this weight gain, or you’re simply a big guy anyway, it’s worth getting clothes that suit your frame. That doesn’t mean you’re hiding it, though; dress comfortably and smartly and you’re great to go this winter.

When shopping for tops, remember that good quality goes a long, long way. Make sure that any tops you buy are well-adjusted to your body and are neither too tight nor loose. Bulky wool sweaters will naturally add volume to your waist and chest, so consider what it best for you with lighter fabrics such as cotton, linen or thin wool.

If you’re a larger guy, try not to wear baggy or tight trousers; a good fit is, once again, absolutely essential. Also, try to avoid trousers with pleats as they make certain areas, particularly your pelvis and rear, look much larger.

Every man should own at least one blazer, so when you choose one as a larger gent, avoid double-breasted blazers as they are well-known to make the upper body look even grander.

Everyone knows that a solid investment in one part of an outfit can truly produce a stunning outcome. That’s why people who are fans of fashion have constantly invested in shoes, because they deliver a fantastic overhaul to an outfit. Here’s a guide to the looks you can get should you invest in trainers from K Swiss (http://www.jdsports.co.uk/men/brand/k-swiss/) and other great brands.

Actually one of the biggest shoe trends of the last couple of years are canvas pumps. Coming in every colour of the rainbow, they are simple, cheap and fashionable, as well as extremely easy to wear (especially if they’re plain white canvas); their versatility makes them absolutely indispensible.

Platform trainers made a big comeback on catwalks recently. Whether you want a high heel or wedge trainers, these are similarly easy to wear for women and offer a fashionable touch to any casual look. The beauty of platform trainers is that they will work with plenty of fashion trends, whether it’s 80s-inspired retro or sporty styles.

Skate trainers may not be for everyone but provide a really cool casual look. They’re designed to be worn loosely and usually come in chunky, bright colours. Best suited to a pair of slouchy jeans, you can really turn a look on its head with these.

Winter is an expensive time for most Brits who shell out more money on utility bills to keep them warm throughout the colder months and Christmas presents for the festive season. This usually means that spending in other areas is curbed to make room for these additional expenses, but with online women’s retailers such as SimplyBe.co.uk it is possible to buy a new outfit for a special occasion – or even winter essentials – on a budget.

Winter hosts a range of social events where it is important for you to look and feel great; it also requires seasonal clothing to keep you feeling snug and stylish. Unlike a summer wardrobe, a winter wardrobe requires more items that can be layered to keep you warm. However, this is no excuse to invest in more clothing that you need – wasting money in the process. Instead, invest in fewer good quality items that are easy to mix-and-match and layer on top of one another.

Finally, it may be tempting to wear whatever is in fashion, but what suits one person doesn’t always suit another. Therefore, be sure to dress to suit your body shape and don’t shy away from experimenting with these trends. Meanwhile, an additional tip to push those pounds further is to invest in classic pieces that won’t go out of fashion and thus can be worn for longer, saving you money down the line.

The phrase ‘sleep on it’ hasn’t come from nowhere; indeed, a good night’s sleep can significantly improve your productivity and reduce stress levels. Sleep can help you stay energetic throughout the day and is especially important during the winter months when it can be challenging to keep bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Cold, dark nights are rolling in and there is nothing better than getting in a warm and cosy bed that is comfortable, such as the range of affordable beds available at Time4Sleep.

The importance of having a comfortable bed cannot be overestimated. If you think of the amount of time you spend in your bed over the years and how much your life can be affected by the quality of sleep you get, it makes sense to invest in a quality bed where you can a restful night’s sleep.

Setting yourself a set pattern for bedtime and waking up in the morning will help condition your body into healthy sleep cycle. You are likely to already know how much sleep you tend to need in order to function well, so use this as a guideline. If you struggle to fall asleep easily, why not try a spot of reading or music before bed, or even a shower.

Finally, embrace the ‘power nap’ and get 15 to 20 minutes of shut-eye throughout the day where you can. You will be amazed at how this can help recharge your mind and body.

Do you ever get frustrated with all the super-slim models you see on the pages of magazines or on the catwalk? Are you pleased to see curvier models emerging and gaining popularity, or do you fancy having a go yourself?

If any of these apply to you, you may be surprised to find out about some of the aspects of plus-size modelling. Although you can see some models used who are every inch the real woman – such as those used at Marisota http://www.marisota.co.uk/.

The fashion industry apparently employs some trickery to make some models look even larger than life.

Several big name models have spoken out about the popular practice of padding out plus-size ladies for shoots and catwalk shows. Saffi Karina, 27, recently spoke to the Daily Mail and said that despite being a plus- size 12 model, when she went for one job with an agency in Germany, they told her they were looking for someone a little bigger.

“I was advised to get a padded undergarment that adds a couple of inches to your bust, waist and hips – a “fat suit”, so to speak,” she said.

American model Marquita pring has also told of being padded using foam for some jobs. For more information, see: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/fashion/news/the-pressure-of-being-a-plussize-model-2208618.html

The unforgiving economic climate has pushed some UK businesses to think up new creative and cost-effective strategies to develop their operations and improve profit – however difficult – as much as possible. Generally speaking, a main factor behind a business’ ability to survive during these times of uncertainty is its ability to adapt to the ever-changing economic climate.

Taking on the specialist skills and knowledge of an external consultant may be one of these strategies and should be covered by your insurance policy. Markel, for example, offer a range of tailor-made consultancy insurance packages. A suitable consultancy insurance package will depend on the nature of your business; therefore it is extremely important that you take the time to go through any policies with your insurance provider before signing up to anything.

When utilised correctly, a consultant can give your business a competitive edge and aid you through these turbulent economic times. Consultants can offer your business valuable problem-solving advice for short-term projects and can be disposed of when their services are no longer needed. Indeed, perhaps one of the most attractive features of using a consultancy service – in light of the fact that a number of businesses are now tightening their belts on spending – is their disposable nature.

When times are tough you often have to bite the bullet and make some sacrifices and one area where you may want to try and make savings is when shopping for clothes. That said, it can be hard to look stylish when spending less cash. You don’t want your clothes to look cheap, but at the same time it’s expensive to splash out on a whole new outfit.

One way to try and maximise your wardrobe potential is to spend a little more on several key items that will last and that can be used to in combination with cheaper items of clothing. This should enhance your overall look and give you many more outfit possibilities. Spend on items that can be worn again and again such as good quality shoes, coats and luxury fabric items like cashmere coats and jumpers. These needn’t cost the earth either if you head online and buy from the likes of Pure Collection.

Colour choices and styles should be an important consideration in order to ensure you pick out something that both suits you and will mix will with your existing wardrobes. For more information about wardrobe staples see:http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/wardrobe-staples-women-must-have-among-their-clot0.html

The implementation of government cuts is far from easy, though specialised and temporary experts from the likes of Interim Partners are proving to be the way forward for dozens of organisations to help them get back on track.

A report published not so long ago by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy revealed that half of finance directors were worried about the complexity of savings, with worries that they would deliver less than expected of them. However, if local authorities do not meet their 2011-12 budgets, it will lead to more job cuts and pain.

In order to get around this, management and finance teams need individuals to assess every part of their organisation to find out where savings can be made. While austerity measures often lead to the questioning of using external consultants, there is a solid financial argument that supports the hiring of services from an interim manager.

Interim managers offer skills in business transformation, strategic finance and change management. As a result, this commercial experience can prove valuable to council finance teams when they want to find millions of pounds worth of efficiency gains.

For this reason, interim managers are value for money. They operate through their own company and charge a daily rate with no national insurance payments, tax, holidays or pension payments necessary.

If you are looking to update your bathroom, underfloor heating is a great cost-effective and eco-friendly option, which can be found at bathroom specialists such as Best Bathrooms. There are a range of advantages to installing this feature in your home:

No need to compromise on design

Underfloor heating is an integral part of many eco-friendly homes. However, a number of people share the misconception that when it comes to environmentally-friendly homes and stylish design, you cannot have one without the expense of another. Yet in reality, this is far from the case and in order to benefit from the comfort of underfloor heating, there is no need to sacrifice style, or even pay a premium.

Creates more space

With underfloor heating, you enjoy more wall space that would otherwise be taken up by radiators or fireplaces – this is particularly useful for small spaces.

Creates ideal air temperature

Underfloor heating radiates and distributes heat evenly throughout the room, meaning all areas of your bathroom are cosy and energy-efficient – saving you money as a result.

Maintenance free

Finally, underfloor heating is extremely reliable and requires no yearly inspections – apart from a typical electrical inspection every ten years – which means you save further cash on maintenance fees.

In difficult economic times individuals’ stress levels tend to rise, making the annual holiday even more essential than usual. It is therefore doubly hard that during these periods family finances become crunched to the point the annual holiday can begin to look like a luxury.

One option a lot of families are plumping for is to stay put on British shores. With such a vast landscape to explore, holidaymakers are realising that choosing self-catering accommodation options in the UK from the likes of Easy Cottages can allow them to stay in firm control of the budget for their breaks. Staying in the midst of the countryside not only allows access to a great number of free methods of entertainment, it also encourages children to learn through nature. Staying in a self-catering property also allows you to set your own schedule and take control of the food budget; after all supermarket shopping can be vastly cheaper and doesn’t mean sacrificing those special family meals associated with holiday times.

So rather than shelving the summer sun completely, why not consider carrying out some of the tips in this article: http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/259400/How-to-cut-the-cost-of-summer-holidays or heading off for your own self-managed break?

If you are new to certain types of technology, though you want to get involved – whether it’s a netbook, camera or camcorder – you really should start reading the reviews of the products in question. Before heading to Misco to buy the item you’re truly after, ensure you start here with your research.

Naturally, you can save yourself a lot of heartache and perhaps a number of unpleasant experiences by taking time out to do a little bit of investigating. Naturally, it is worth bearing in mind that not all review sites are independent – in fact, more unscrupulous organisations are known to establish review sites themselves to boost the reputation of their products. Rely on commercial review sites such as http://www.techradar.com, or look out for syndicated or ad-based resources.

Of course, you may want to speak to friends and relatives and find out what has worked for them, if they have the kind of thing you want. Here, you’ll also be able to check what they’re using – it may end up being the model or style of tech you end up going for!

Finally, get to grips with specifications, optional extras and pricing. You’ll be able to get together a great idea of what is and isn’t a bargain, and from here you’ll be able to invest with confidence.

Our eyes are important to us and most people do whatever they can to sustain the health and quality of their peepers. Ultralase (http://www.ultralase.com/) is a medical procedure that offers people suffering from poor quality vision the chance to restore their ability to see better. This relatively new practice is a great option for those who have had enough of wearing, or indeed spending a significant amount of money on contact lenses or glasses.

Unlike other procedures of the same purpose, LASIK eye surgery is quick and relatively pain-free. Patients experience just minor irritation post-sugery, which means they can start to enjoy the benefits much sooner than some other procedures of this kind. It works by treating the cornea – the part which covers the iris, pupil and frontal area of the eye – and is suitable for people who suffer from near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism.

In order to establish whether you are eligible for the procedure or not, your eye doctor will conduct a pre-surgery eye examination to determine your condition and whether the surgery could benefit you. Here, you will also be asked a number of questions regarding any medical conditions you may have and any you may take medication for. For example, people who are pregnant, diabetic or have any immune disorders may be refused eye surgery. Meanwhile, the minimum age you can be considered for the procedure is 18-years-old.

Bagging yourself a new, fashionable wardrobe doesn’t necessarily mean you need to break the bank in the process. Before you begin your shopping spree, set yourself a realistic budget and think carefully about the clothing you need and the fashion that usually suits your figure. Curvy women, for example, may want to check out the plus size range offered by Bonmarche and draw inspiration from this season’s trends.

Before you start buying, think carefully about your lifestyle and where you tend to wear your clothes. This may seem like common sense, but a number of women give in to the temptation of buying something new that they never actually get the chance to wear, leaving them with less money to spend on items they need. People who tend to buy simple, classic pieces often find that their clothes are more versatile and enjoy a great deal of wear out of them, meaning they get more value for money. These outfits can be brought bang-on-trend with fashionable accessories such as jewellery, handbags and shoes. In addition, it is worthwhile spending more on the essential staples of your wardrobe – choosing good quality pieces will give you a solid foundation on which to build your outfits. You’ll be amazed at how mixing and matching pieces will create outfit after outfit.

With high profile celebrities such as Jonathan Edwards and Sir Steve Redgrave advocating the advantages of laser eye surgery, those with sight problems are increasingly investigating the options available to them with the help of companies such as Ultralase IE. But aside from the ease of not having to carry contact lenses or spectacles on your travels, or have them mist up during sport, does surgery make economic sense?

Depending on the type of surgery required, the cost of laser eye surgery can run into thousands, with this initial outlay putting many people off surgery. However, where laser eye surgery has one cost, paying for contact lenses extends beyond paying for the actual cost of lenses. Over the years the cost of lenses, fitting (by an optometrist), check-ups and contact lens solutions can mount significantly. For more information about costs associated with the wearing of contact lenses, see: http://www.lasereyesurgery.co.uk/.

Depending on your individual requirement you could find the cost of wearing contact lenses mount into hundreds of pounds, with those at the higher end of the spectrum paying as much as £500 each year just to maintain their contact lens regime. With this in mind, spending even a few thousand pounds on laser eye surgery could represent a saving for many individuals in a very short space of time.

British summertime doesn’t always guarantee sunshine and warmth, so it is important to be prepared for cooler and possibly wet weather. Having a reliable summer coat can make sure aren’t caught out if any unpredictable showers or cold weather takes you by surprise.

JD Williams boast plus size womens fashion that draws inspiration from this season’s trends. They offer plus size clothing in sizes 12 to 34, including evening dresses, summer dresses, knitwear, tops, jeans, trousers and womens coats. Unlike the offerings from some retailers, finding fashionable and affordable womens clothing in a JD Williams size 16 isn’t uncommon.

Womens clothing catalogues allow you to browse a range of womens coats from the convenience and comfort of your own home and compare products and prices, meaning you can easily track down a versatile coat that is perfect for the summer months. Look for a coat that is lighter than a winter coat but will keep you snug for cooler days during the holiday season – you might even opt for one that is waterproof so you are protected against showers.

When shopping for your summer coat bear in mind some of the key trends for this season which you think will suit your figure. If you want a bold and eye-catching coat, why not inject colour into your wardrobe with 70s-inspired jewel toned block colours – bold blues and vibrant oranges are particularly popular at the moment. You can even combine trends and offset this type of coat with nude coloured shoes, which have the added benefit of elongating those pins.

Alternatively, if you prefer a classic and timeless coat a tan-coloured mac might be the best choice for you. This option not only denotes a key summer trend but is also remarkably versatile and most likely to remain in fashion for years to come. This means that you could save a great deal of money on replacement coats in the future, which is particularly important if you a buying on a strict budget and you want longevity from your purchase.

A new cosmetic surgery procedure, where Botox is injected into the skin of the breasts and around the nipple in a bid to reduce wrinkles and provide lift, may offer a cheaper alternative to traditional breast augmentation and breast enlargement procedures, according to the Daily Mail.

The Botox boob job or Botox breast lift made its entrance to the industry back in 2009 at the World Conference of Cosmetic and Anti-ageing Medicine in Monte Carlo and has gained more and more popularity in the UK ever since, according to a recent article by the Daily Mail.

This new treatment tones and lifts the skin and helps shape the breasts, giving them volume and ironing out wrinkles as a result. Its proponents claim that the procedure has no side-effects and no recovery time whatsoever and that the results are instantaneous. The Botox boob job can apparently lift breasts by up to two centimetres and increase their volume by about ten per cent.

The new treatment is much cheaper than traditional Mastopexy, which usually costs around £3,000, and the results last for an average of six months although effects reach their optimum level a few days after the injection.

Recent research by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) indicates that on the whole the number of plastic surgery procedures from providers such as Mya is on the rise. Last year there were 38,274 surgical procedures carried out in the UK – up by five per cent on the previous year – including breast enlargement, breast augmentation and laser liposuction. For example, the celebrity craze for revealing dresses has resulted in more women having laser lipo on their backs. Since the fashion was sported by X Factor ex-judge Cheryl Cole, liposuction operations on backs have jumped by 54 per cent, replacing stomachs and thighs as the most popular body area for laser lipo.

They were once a lady’s well-kept secret, however magic pants or ‘big knickers’ are now available in most stores, though admittedly in varying degrees of quality. Head online to specialsits such as simplybe.co.uk to find a wide range of quality shapewear. While some women save them for special occasions in order to boost their confidence, there are others who choose to wear them every day in much the same vein as an old-fashioned girdle. So what do they do, and why should you own a pair?

Magic knickers can help you minimise and support areas your pants don’t even cover. Many feature cycling short or boxer short style designs which can help reduce the appearance of your bottom, thighs and hips as well as your stomach. In this way magic pants can do the job of several different items of underwear and save you cash.

Seamless designs for magic knickers of all shapes mean you can make tweaks to your shape without them being detected. Unlike normal pants you can wear tight body con dresses without worrying about falling victim to VPL.

Wearing magic knickers can help you go down as much as a whole dress size, potentially saving you money on buying a new dress, or other items to make a new outfit – not forgetting the accessories you would have to buy to match!

Normal underwear simply does not give you the support of shapewear. Slipping on a pair of magic knickers can give you the confidence to wear an outfit you may otherwise avoid and can help enhance your whole mood so that you can strut your stuff with pride.

When you wear normal underwear with tight clothing you can find that buttons on trousers and skirts can dig in or the seams on a dress can pinch. By wearing magic knickers you can relieve this discomfort. In addition magic knickers can be made from soothing lycra-based fabrics that feel silky on your skin.

Increasingly, fashionistas are taking to cyber space to bag their designer bargains from the comfort of their own home. Here are some of the reasons why you should give online shopping a try for yourself:

Compare product prices and features

Online shopping allows you to browse product prices and features across websites to ensure that you get the best selection for the best prices out there. Meanwhile, many online shops hold not just their own brands but also a collection of great designer clothing, such as the designer brands at Bank fashion http://www.bankfashion.co.uk/. Bank fashion brings you all the latest fashion for women and men from a range of designer brands such as Pauls Boutique, Lipsy, Superdry and Henleys.

Convenience

Shopping online allows you to enjoy the convenience of shopping in a relaxing environment at home. It takes any hassle associated with taking to the street and doing your shopping this way out of the equation – forget stuffy changing rooms, waiting in long queues to pay for your purchases or finding a car parking spot on busy Saturday mornings. This is particularly the case if you are looking for something specific, such as designer clothes, summer clothing or a dress for a special occasion.

No pressure from salespeople

Online shopping allows you to browse in your own time at your own leisure without any pressure from salespeople. If you find something that you like but you are still unsure about buying it, there is nothing stopping you from going away and having a think about it. Meanwhile, some websites even offer a facility that lets you save any items to your account that you may have your eye on, so they can be found easily and quickly upon your return to the website.

Manufacturing’s central role to the UK’s recovery could be exactly the opposite, if new figures are anything to go by. The monthly Markit/CIPS PMI index showed output dropped to a seven-month low in April, suggesting that manufacturing is struggling as domestic customers cut spending in the area.

As far as the manufacturing sector goes, it fell to 54.6 points in April and registered the the weakest reading since last September. Meanwhile, March’s reading was revised from 57.1 to 56.7, though this still stands above the golden 50-point mark that divides expansion from contraction. Meanwhile, the survey showed that output prices remained near to its peak in March, ultimately concluding that consumers continue to be hit with rising prices. These were also affected by reported delays in receiving parts from suppliers such as during the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Additionally, consumer confidence took a major hit and lower orders were registered from the construction sector, Markit/CIPS reported. Still, not all was bad; exports remained a bright spot as orders rose during April, largely due to the low pound.

Speaking to the Guardian, chief executive at CIPS David Noble said the survey highlighted a bleaker future than there was planned just a few months ago. He explained: “Export orders continue to grow at a very healthy rate but domestic demand is suffering as a result of falling consumer confidence and spending. Much of the output growth came from orders, which is the equivalent of a consumer dipping into their savings to maintain their existing spending levels. The problem with this is that, just like savings, backlogs of orders will soon run out if they are not topped up.”

In winter your coat checklist is clear – you want something which will keep you warm, dry and ultimately not make you resemble the marshmallow man in the process. In spring selecting outerwear can be a trickier process; when the weather is changeable you need a cover up which will protect you from an even higher number of elements while remaining practical and chic. So what should you be looking for?

The perfect spring jacket will be waterproof to keep out those April showers and lightweight so you can fold it over your arm or into your bag if the sun is on form. There are few designs which fulfil this brief more fully than the trusted mac – an iconic failsafe which ticks all the right boxes you can rely on a mac to safely finish off any outfit. Buying a mac in a classic shade such as navy or camel will ensure you can bring it out of the wardrobe season after season; however there are plenty of brighter colours in the shops at the moment for those who prefer to channel the sun’s bright rays.

A blazer might not hold up well should you be stuck in shower central, but when it comes to office style it’s a much smarter alternative than a cardigan and will keep out any spring breezes. This season choose an over-sized tuxedo style number with turned-up sleeves.

A hooded parka is a perfect choice for picnics in the park and will protect you adequately when those raindrops fall. Although this is a less formal option than the mac or blazer a good hooded parka can look both cute and stylish – just make sure you pick out a design with a good quality finish.

Despite the UK government’s talk of austerity measures and widespread pay freezes, some of us are still reaching for the stars and enjoying the high life.

Demand for luxury goods at high end retail brand LVMH who own brands such as Louis Vuitton, Moet & Chandon, Dior and Tag Heuer, recorded a 17 per cent rise in sales during the first three months of 2011. The brand reported sales £4.6 billion in the quarter, surpassing analysts’ estimates.

It had been feared that the recent earthquake in Japan could hit LVMH hard as the market is key for the brand, however, sales in Asia remained strong. In addition LMVH reported that sales within the US and Europe are now beginning to improve.

In a Statement the French firm said: “All business groups recorded double-digit organic revenue growth in the quarter”.

The firm confirmed recovery in some of their core sales sectors, including wines and spirits, and the watches and jewellery divisions, stating that these divisions “continued their strong recovery due to a confirmed return in client demand”.

The luxury goods frim also owns the Givenchy and Celine fashion brands which have been enjoying media acclaim within fashion circles recently in light of the influence of Phoebe Philo at Celine and her ability to tap into the popular return to classic dressing.

Shopaholics often find that they are denting their wallets, though there may actually be something that can balance this drawback out quite nicely: the health benefits of shopping. A report in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health discovered that men and women who shopped daily lived longer than others who did not engage in retail therapy, even when adjusting for physical and mental infirmity.

Researchers led by Dr Yu-Hung Chang of the Institute of Population Health Sciences in Taiwan looked into trends involving nearly 2,000 men and women who were 65 and over and lived in their own home. It was concluded that shopping provides companionship, better opportunities to maintain a healthy diet and, most importantly, exercise.

Dr Yu-Hung Chang said regular shoppers would still likely be in better health. He said: “An elder who shops less for food would be at risk of poorer diet quality necessary to maintain health. A vicious cycle that involves limited shopping and poor diet could evolve for elders. In shopping venues, socialising with, or watching others can provide social and mental benefits.”

He added: “Compared with other types of leisure-time physical activity like formal exercise, which usually requires motivation and sometimes professional instruction, shopping is easier to undertake and maintain.”

People may feel they have missed the boat with a spring look in their home, yet it’s never too late to get involved in seasonal trends. Kristin Alber, owner of home decor boutique Domestic Bliss, spoke to ABC15 about reinvigorating the look of the home with a few great tips, though stressed that a good spring clean was necessary before people could move forward with their big ideas.

As such, people must firstly clear out any clutter in order to have the room to create a new space for new additions to the home. Ms Alber said that tables and clusters ought to be cleared too, setting them up for a completely new look. On top of this, a new fragrance should be brought into the home through candles and sprays to really hammer home the new feel to more senses.

The expert continued: “Buy a bundle of fresh flowers or cut some from your own garden. You don’t have to have a huge vase. Small groupings of individual flowers make a spring statement. Add a floral print through a throw on the bed or a chair and allow your mind to wander to the fresh flowers of the season even when you’re indoors.”

Colour should also be used in splashes, concluded Ms Alber. There are several ways to do this too, such as injecting bright hues onto lamps, pillows, hand towels and cushions

If you are thinking of putting your property up for sale you you might want to take a step back and wait until market conditions improve. According to new figures published by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) last month, there is currently no sign of the UK property market substantially picking up http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-13037917.

Rics housing spokesperson, Ian Perry, said: “With the prospect of forthcoming interest rate rises and continued shortage of mortgage funding, it seems that overall recovery for the national housing market is still some way off.”

The Rics monthly poll for March showed that house sales and prices have flattened out, and interest from potential buyers is on the wane. The findings also indicated significant regional differences in terms of house prices. London, for example, reflected more of an optimistic outlook compared to other regions.

Mr Perry commented: “Within England and Wales, a clear north south divide is emerging, with London being the only region recording rising prices, demonstrating that the capital is still operating under different market conditions to the rest of the country.”

This is good news for house-hunters who are hoping to relocate from the south further north, as they will get more value for their money.

If you have decided to hang-fire in order to sell your home at a later date, and you have sufficient time and money to play around with, it might be a good idea to invest in some home improvements to increase your ROI (return on investment) when the time comes.

The best way to get acclimatised to Russia, naturally, is to visit its most Europe-like city. Many consider this to be St Petersburg, which is lucky for people wanting a more accessible experience of the former Soviet Union; after all, it also happens to be one of the most beautiful places you can go. Formerly Petrograd and Leningrad, it has all manner of beautiful sights to behold.

Maybe you’ll first visit Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city and one of the tallest Eastern Orthodox churches in the world. It is a late neoclassical take on the traditional Greek cross church but was stripped of its Christianity by communism. During the Second World War II, the dome was painted in grey to avoid enemy aircraft bombs. Since the fall of communism, it has been restored to its former glory and regular worship activity has resumed.

If war’s your bag, it’s worth visiting the Peter and Paul Fortress on Zayachy Island, the original citadel founded by Peter the Great in 1703 to protect the city from a possible Swedish counterattack during the Northern War. Shoppers, meanwhile, will love Nevsky Avenue, home to the majority of nightlife and stores in the city.

Of course, no trip to St Petersburg is complete without a visit to Palace Square, where the Winter Palace is found. This white-and-azure baroque building housed the Russian Tsars from 1732 until their overthrow in 1917, when the storming of the building became the iconic symbol of the start of communism. It overlooks Alexander Column, the largest red granite monument in the world.

A guide to business insurance

Insuring certain aspects of your business is essential. Businesses usually purchase many types of insurance to protect themselves from risks. Before starting up a new business, you must ascertain which business insurance cover is required. Increasingly insurance providers offer a flexible approach to this process, recognising that all businesses are different. Part of a worldwide brand with nearly 100 years of experience in niche markets, Markel (UK) Limited is a leading specialist insurer providing insurance for a variety of professional, management, social welfare, charitable and specialty property/liability risks for organisations of all sizes, http://www.markeluk.com.

Choosing the right insurance for your business can be tricky, so here’s a guide to the different types:

Professional Indemnity

Compulsory for most professional businesses and services. It protects your business against third party claims of negligence or a mistake of your business, committed in the course of their professional duties, resulting in their loss or damage. It also covers legal costs. The types of businesses that often take out PI include accountants, IT consultants, journalists, architects, financial advisors and engineers.

Employer’s Liability

Employers are responsible for the health and safety of their employees while they are work. Most employers are required by the law to insure against liability for injury or disease to their employees arising out of their employment. Your employees might try to claim compensation from you if they think you are responsible, so it is important for you to cover yourself against this risk. Employees injured due to an employer’s negligence can seek compensation even if the business goes into liquidation or receivership. Employer’s Liability, arising from The Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969, ensures that your business has at least a minimum level of insurance cover against any such claims.

Public Liability

Covers you for claims made against you by members of the public or other businesses, but not for claims by employees. PL should be considered if members of the public, clients or customers visit your premises. It will protect you in the event that a mistake is made which causes an injury to a member of the public or customer, or which damages their property. The cover should include any legal fees and expenses which result from any claim by a third party.

Insurance can be purchased online, either as part of a full business insurance policy or as a stand-alone policy. Visit http://smallbusiness.com/wiki/Insurance for more guidance on insurance and be sure to use an authorised insurer.
It could be argued that jeans are the Little Black Dress of a man’s wardrobe. Something that can be dressed up or down, they should be the one reliable item you always feel good in. To guarantee you have a pair you can depend on it’s important you find the right pair – and the good news is this doesn’t have to cost a packet.

If you are on the lookout for the perfect pair of jeans you’d do well to start online. Search engines allow you to be as specific as you like in your quest, so note down your preferred style, colour and even brand to help you locate the right pair. If you are a larger gentleman don’t think jeans aren’t an option for you, there are plenty of specialists online such as http://www.menswearuk.com/advice-guides/find-your-perfect-length-jeans-and-trousers/ who have a range of styles for all sizes.

Before you buy be certain of your size. This may vary depending on the style you choose but the key measurements you need are your waist and leg length. Your correct leg length should be around an inch off the floor. Measure the length of your inseam from your crotch to the back of your foot and don’t forget to wear your regular shoes. If you find you are in between two lengths always opt for the longer length as denim can be easily turned up.

Denim is hard wearing so it’s not unreasonable to expect a pair of jeans to last you years. To make sure your jeans don’t go out of fashion in this time try and pick out a classic style such as a straight leg or bootcut – these are more flattering on larger frames too. Denim shades can change with the season so if you are really looking for something bang on trend do your research at places like http://www.menshealth.com/style/denim.php but again if you want something to last stick to shades that stick around such as original blue and dark denim. These shades are probably the most versatile denim colours as they are more easily dressed up with a blazer and shirt for a smarter look. The perfect pair of jeans should be your failsafe base for the perfect outfit, so don’t settle on anything less than the right pair.

The décor of your home can be the make or break of the sale of your property. Giving a good first impression to potential buyers is key and making some modest home improvements can go a long way in achieving that sale. The property market finally seems to be looking up, but it is wise for sellers to do all they can to set their property out from the rest.

Having a dirty or old fashioned home will deter buyers and possibly reduce any offer made. One of the main factors in increasing value is the size and living space of the property. It is important to reduce any clutter in order to maximise the perceived living space. Keeping colour themes light and neutral also gives the illusion of space and provides potential buyers with a blank canvas on which to develop their personal tastes. Alternatively, you can see if there are any attractive themes in your home (colour themes, furniture etc.), and ensure that any improvements you make to your décor are consistent with these themes.

Look for any obvious opportunities for improvement. For instance, if you have an unfinished basement in your home that can be converted into finished living space, begin there. If basic furniture, such as beds and sofas, are slightly worn and battered, look to replace them or simply use techniques to improve them. Some bed specialists, such as http://www.time4sleep.co.uk/, offer a range of space-saving beds, with large built-in storage compartments. Pillows and throws are useful here, while rugs can be used to mask any hard-to-remove marks on flooring. For inspiration, such as who offer a wide variety of styles at very competitive prices. Don’t shy away from re-using existing items. Get creative – change their design or make them into something new.

Consider the style of your neighbourhood and establish what your home has, and doesn’t have, in comparison with other properties in the area. Develop your unique selling points and invest in areas where the property is lacking. Get an idea of the current value of your home before making any amendments, and give yourself a sensible budget in line with what you expect to gain from the property after improvements are made. A cocktail of common sense and thrift can determine viable options.

As a nation us Brits are rather fond of a bit of surgical enhancement – the ladies in particular are still investing in procedures despite the recession, with 90 per cent of all procedures in the UK in 2009 carried out on the fairer sex.

One procedure which can always be found at the top of the surgery wish list is breast enlargement, with women consistently taking their lead from celebs and opting to enhance their bust. Although in recent years many surgeons have reported that women are now seeking more natural looking breasts after undergoing surgery, thousands are still using surgery to give their boobs a boost. This month fashionista Victoria Beckham finally admitted that in an interview with Vogue UK that she had a breast enlargement operations, although she now claims that she has had these removed.

If you are considering surgery to make your breasts appear rounder or more full it’s important to be aware of all the facts and how the procedure is carried out. Surgical procedures are constantly updating, so seek news from the experts on breast enlargement.

Although cosmetic surgery is traditionally considered a luxury spend, prices have come down in recent years due to market competition. There are also lots of discount offers on treatments available. However, rather than going for the cheapest deal available, make sure you do your research to find a reliable surgeon and clinic you can trust. After all you wouldn’t go to the cheapest hairdresser’s in town and expect the best cut would you? If finance is an issue talk to your chosen clinic to see if they offer a payment plan or interest-free period, if this is not available you may be able to find credit through your bank but be sure to shop around to get the best rate.

You can check if a company is authorised by searching the register on www.fsa.gov.uk or by telephoning the Financial Services Authority on 0845 606 1234.

When making a big electronics purchase it can be easy to get carried away with spending on extras, particularly with in-store sales staff making helpful suggestions on how you can improve the performance of your purchase. Buying batteries, wires and cables soon adds up and industry feedback suggests spending extra money on necessities such as HDMI cables isn’t always worth your while.

HDMI cables are used to connect devices like DVD players, game consoles and Blu-ray players to flat screen televisions – with new HDTV’s having at least two HDMI inputs. These unassuming extras can be purchased in some places for as little as £1, but some high street retailers stock models which cost more than one hundred times that.

With digital systems, it is generally recognised that the quality of audio and visual performance lies in the television appliance itself. So buying a more expensive HDMI cable of perceived higher quality is likely only to make only very slight nuances of difference in what you actually see and hear.

For those with multiple machines operating within a digital entertainment system there may be some benefit in spending more than a few pounds on their HDMI cables. However, it is possible to get cables that do the job adequately without digging too deep in your pockets. If you need to stock up on HDMI cables make sure you don’t pay over the odds by buying from an online specialist such as http://www.maplin.co.uk.

Recent reviews, including this one from cnet: http://reviews.cnet.com/hdmi-guide/ have backed up the view that spending more on HDMI cables is most often unnecessary and that the marketing of these connecting wires is often confusing for the consumer.

To give you a clearer guide to the upper limit of what you should expect to pay, expert Chris Jenkins, tech labs manager for Future publishing recently told the BBC that he recommended budgeting around ten per cent of a system’s price for HDMI cables. To read the BBC newsbeat article in full, see: http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/10056547
